John Wayne Airport—Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility #33

Butier Engineering, Inc. acted as the Inspector of Record for the construction of the new 16,555 square foot Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Facility #33, located adjacent to Taxiway B.

Owned by John Wayne Airport and staffed by the Orange County Fire Authority, the station responds to aviation emergencies as well as emergencies in the main terminal. The station is designed to accommodate eight firefighters. Five apparatus bays, a drive-through maintenance bay, and a training facility are included. The station also features a small observation tower designed to supplement the adjacent FAA tower. The building's major roof elements use traditional hangar proportions and are designed to complement the roof forms of the existing passenger terminal.

Additional construction elements for the stand-alone, concrete masonry unit (CMU) structure included the installation of an emergency crash phone system and HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Butier's construction management responsibilities included review of plans and specifications prior to bidding; constructability review of drawings; evaluation of proposing contractors backgrounds; review of submittals and RFIs; interface with design engineers and architects; inspection of work for conformance with approved plans, specifications and code compliance; and interface with jurisdiction building officials.
