Mid-Basin Injection (MBI) Wells – Centennial Park

Butier Engineering, Inc. provided constructability review, project coordination, resident engineering, and construction inspection services for the Mid-basin Injection Wells Project located in and around the City of Santa Ana’s 87-acre Centennial Park. The wells directly inject 6-10 million gallons of water per day from the Orange County Water District's Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) into the principal groundwater aquifer in the Orange County groundwater basin, enough water for 85,000 people. The District and Butier's construction management team coordinated closely with the City of Santa Ana, Heritage Museum, Godinez High School, Santa Ana College, and state and federal agencies. Heritage Museum is a cultural and natural history center that contains a historic plaza featuring several buildings from the 1890s.

Scope of Work

• Construction of four (4) groundwater injection wells at Centennial Park in below-grade vaults (1,200 feet deep)
• Installation of submersible pumps within the four injection wells
• Construction of two monitoring wells at Heritage Museum
• Construction of 5,700 linear feet of purified recycled water injection supply pipeline along the Edinger Bridge that connects to the District’s existing GWRS pipeline
• Construction of 4,200 linear feet of backflush discharge pipeline that discharges to the Greenville-Banning Channel and Centennial Park Lake

The District made the following enhancements to Centennial Park and Heritage Museum:

• Restrooms and changing rooms near the Park’s soccer fields
• Restrooms and Park office near the skatepark
• Sidewalk between the parking lot and soccer fields
• Fencing surrounding the skatepark
• Repaving 9.5 acres of parking
• New entrance sign for Godinez High School
• Enhancements to Heritage Museum
